The upcoming Range Rover Electric is generating significant anticipation, and potential buyers now have the opportunity to join a waiting list for JLR's first electric car.

Promised to deliver performance akin to the current V8-powered flagship, the electric Range Rover is poised to be a formidable contender in the luxury electric SUV market, challenging rivals like the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.

While the vehicle remains shrouded in secrecy, with even camouflaged prototypes not yet seen on public roads, it's expected to maintain a design closely aligned with the existing internal combustion engine (ICE) Range Rovers.

Preview images suggest that the electric variant will retain the brand's signature styling, incorporating some unique elements to distinguish it as an electric vehicle. Notably, it will feature an 800V architecture, facilitating ultra-fast charging capabilities.

The electric Range Rover will be built on the same Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) as the current models, which is designed to support hybrid and electric powertrains.

According to JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) product engineering boss Thomas Müller, this first battery-electric Range Rover model will be “the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever.”

While specific performance details are yet to be disclosed, Müller assures that the electric version will maintain the Range Rover's renowned “go-anywhere” capability. This includes towing capacity, wading, and all-terrain prowess surpassing any other luxury electric SUV, even to the extent of navigating 850mm-deep water.

Indications that the electric model's performance will be “comparable” to the existing V8, which delivers 523bhp, suggest a high-powered setup. The vehicle is likely to employ a twin-motor system, enhancing all-wheel drive functionality and incorporating technologies like torque vectoring to improve off-road capabilities.

JLR has initiated on-road prototype testing across diverse environments, including Sweden and Dubai, focusing on the vehicle’s underbody, battery durability, and thermal management.

The Range Rover Electric will be manufactured in Solihull, alongside the current mild- and plug-in hybrid versions. Initially, it will utilize batteries from external suppliers, with plans to transition to batteries produced in Tata's new Somerset gigafactory in the future. Batteries and electric drive units will be assembled at JLR’s electric propulsion manufacturing center in Wolverhampton.

Originally, JLR had planned to open order books for the new model by the end of this year. However, the launch of the waiting list now offers interested customers early access to pre-order the vehicle when formal sales commence in 2024. This approach allows enthusiasts and prospective buyers to secure their place in line for this highly anticipated luxury electric SUV.
