Renault is set to rejuvenate its lineup with the reintroduction of the Twingo, reimagined as an affordable sub-£17,000 electric vehicle (EV). Touted for its "best-in-class" efficiency, this new EV is poised to become a cornerstone of Renault's expanded portfolio of seven electric vehicles in Europe.

The revival of the Twingo follows in the footsteps of other Renault models like the Mégane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, 5, and 4, which have similarly embraced retro names and design cues. This strategy underscores Renault's commitment to blending nostalgia with modern electric vehicle technology.

Unveiled during a Capital Markets Day event by Renault Group’s Ampere, its dedicated EV division, the new Twingo is set to make its market debut in 2026. Renault emphasizes European design and engineering for this forthcoming city car, and is competitively positioning it against Chinese counterparts in terms of pricing. The development of the Twingo may include collaboration with external partners, as indicated by Renault.

Renault is focusing on cost-effective production, asserting that the new Twingo will be 50% cheaper to produce than a comparable new C-segment SUV. This cost efficiency is attributed to a reduction in material use and a shift towards a software-centric platform, which is expected to require fewer physical components.

Details about the new Twingo are still sparse, but Renault Group describes it as a “fit-for-purpose urban vehicle with no compromise.” It’s projected to achieve an impressive efficiency of 6.2 miles per kWh and boasts a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions across its lifecycle compared to the “average European internal combustion engine (ICE) car sold in 2023.”

There's speculation, as per Automotive News Europe, that the new Twingo might be manufactured at Renault's facility in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. This would be a strategic move to fill the void left by the ICE version of the Twingo, which, although still on sale in certain left-hand-drive markets, is approaching a decade in age.

Priced under €20,000 (around £17,000), Renault Group envisions the Twingo as an exceptionally affordable entry into the electric car market.
