In a bold step towards advancing in-car technology, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new payment feature that allows drivers to settle their bills for items such as fuel directly from their cars. This payment innovation, dubbed the Mercedes Pay+ system, integrates a fingerprint sensor for seamless transactions.

Though not the first to introduce a fingerprint sensor in vehicles—recall the Audi A8 between 2002 and 2007 which featured a sensor solely for ignition—Mercedes-Benz claims a first in transforming this biometric feature into a payment gateway.

Developed in collaboration with global financial giant, Mastercard, Mercedes Pay+ ensures a swift and secure payment process utilizing biometric two-factor authentication. This novel system will be accessible to all Mercedes vehicles fitted with the MBUX infotainment system from 2020 onwards. For those without the built-in feature, there's an option to have the sensor installed.

Currently exclusive to Germany, this software will make its debut across over 3,600 fuel stations. Mercedes, however, assures that it's eyeing broader European horizons in the near future. The seamless procedure involves the system automatically linking with the service station. It then computes the potential maximum spend based on prevailing fuel rates and the fuel needed. After refueling, drivers can authorize payment with a simple touch of their fingerprint, promptly receiving a digital receipt.

Reflecting on the future of such innovations, Mercedes-Benz cites data from the German market research firm, GfK. The findings suggest a promising uptrend with nearly 50% of individuals aged 18 to 39 indicating their inclination to use infotainment systems for direct orders and payments. Furthermore, considering the global shift towards electric vehicles, the system's adaptability seems imminent. A staggering 60% expressed their willingness to handle gas or electric vehicle charging bills through their car's system.

The integration of such technologies, Mercedes hints, could well shape the future of motoring and commerce.
