Volkswagen teases with its upcoming ID GTI concept, an affordable performance variant of the ID 2, echoing the original Golf GTI in both spirit and style.

Unveiled at the 2023 Munich motor show, this compact, front-wheel-drive hot hatch is set to lead Volkswagen’s new beginner electric vehicle lineup. Equipped with a front-situated electric motor, a specially designed sport suspension, hallmark GTI design traits, and an anticipated starting price of about £26,000, the ID GTI is slated for a 2026 reveal and a sales launch in early 2027.

Underpinning the ID GTI is a shortened MEB platform, similar to the regular ID 2. It accommodates a forward-placed electric motor and a sizeable battery - likely the larger 56kWh pack available in the ID 2.

Dimensions wise, this powerful ID 2 variant, stretching 4104mm in length, 1840mm in width, and 1499mm in height, slightly outpaces the current petrol-driven Polo GTI. Matching the standard ID 2, the ID GTI seats five, boasts a 490-litre trunk capacity, expandable to 1330 litres with folded rear seats. An extra 50-litre under-seat compartment is crafted for charging cables and other essentials.

While technical specifics remain undisclosed, the ID GTI's development reportedly boasts up to 226bhp, a 0-62mph sprint of 6.9 seconds, and a 273-mile range. These stats would position the ID 2 GTI competitively against contenders like the Abarth 500e.

Distinctive features include a revamped front bumper, standout LED daytime lights, a contrasting black air inlet with honeycomb accents, red tow hooks, and a white-lit VW emblem, augmented by the firm's IQ Light matrix tech.

Adding flair are its extended wheel arches, 20-inch retro-style wheels, GTI branding beneath the doors, and a beefy rear spoiler. Other touches include 3D light graphics, an illuminated red badge, and GTI decals on a black bumper backdrop.

Sporty vibes continue indoors, from the three-spoke steering wheel with a red top marker to the "Jack-e" checkered seats and a golfball-inspired infotainment dial. The 10.9-inch digital screen offers an 'analogue' setting reminiscent of the Mk1 Golf GTI, while the larger 12.9-inch touchscreen revisits past themes. Paying homage to the Golf GTI's rally past, the head-up display casts data for both driver and co-driver.
