Volvo is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with the luxurious EM90, an electric MPV designed to offer a "comfortable living room experience" on the road, boasting an impressive range exceeding 450 miles.

Targeted primarily at the Chinese market, where it's currently open for pre-order, the EM90 shares its platform with the Zeekr 009 MPV from Volvo's sibling brand. However, it boasts distinct interior and exterior designs that align with Volvo's stylistic ethos.

As the third new release from Volvo in the past year, following the EX90 SUV and the EX30 crossover, the EM90 emerges as a formidable competitor in the luxury MPV sector, challenging established models like the Lexus LM and Mercedes V-Class.

At its core is a robust 116kWh battery, promising a range of 458 miles under China's CLTC testing criteria. The battery is capable of fast charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. Powering the vehicle is a 268bhp motor located on the rear axle, enabling a sprint from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds.

Dimension-wise, the EM90 measures 5,206 mm in length, 2,024 mm in width, and 1,859 mm in height.

Last month, images of the EM90's exterior were circulated online by China's Ministry for Information and Technology. Volvo has now officially unveiled the interior and provided comprehensive technical details.

Luxury and comfort are paramount in the EM90's design, with advanced sound isolation, road noise cancellation technology, dual-chamber air suspension, and specially designed 'silent' tyres.

The interior arrangement features six seats, including plush lounge seats in the middle row and a standard pair behind. These middle-row seats offer adjustable sliding, reclining, heating, and ventilation options, along with folding tray tables, individual control panels, and a 15.6-inch ceiling-mounted screen for entertainment and connectivity.

Volvo highlights the EM90's sophisticated voice assistant, capable of transforming the interior space into a theater, meeting room, or bedroom, adjusting screens, seats, windows, air conditioning, and lighting seamlessly.

The front cabin aligns with Volvo's recent models, featuring a minimalist dashboard with a 15.4-inch infotainment screen, a separate driver display, and minimal physical controls.


Initially launching in China, Volvo has not disclosed if the EM90 will be available in other markets. However, the success of similar high-end MPVs like the Lexus LM in the UK suggests potential demand for such luxury people carriers.

Despite Volvo's UK lineup becoming exclusively SUV-oriented following the discontinuation of estates and saloons, the positive market response to the Lexus LM may indicate a potential opening for vehicles like the EM90 in regions beyond China.
