Set to make its UK debut in July, the latest Ford Mustang, now in its seventh iteration, introduces a fresh chapter without the 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder variant in its lineup.

With a starting price of £55,685, the Mustang GT is available in both coupé and convertible versions, signaling a bold evolution in the lineage of this iconic American muscle car.

The pinnacle of this new range, the Dark Horse edition, comes with a £10,000 premium, primarily targeting enthusiasts with a penchant for track days. Despite its modern enhancements, the Mk7 Mustang retains the platform of its predecessor, the Mk6, instead of transitioning to Ford's newest CD6 framework.

In terms of dimensions, the Mustang asserts its presence with a height of 1397mm, a width of 1915mm, and a length of 4811mm, accompanied by a 382-litre boot capacity, slightly reduced by 26 litres compared to the Mk6 model.

Powering the Mustang GT is the familiar Coyote 5.0-litre V8 engine, which has been significantly refined with updates to its bore and stroke. The result is a robust 439bhp and 398lb ft of torque, an increase from its predecessor. Although comprehensive performance metrics are pending, expectations are set for a sprint from 0-62mph in approximately 4.0 seconds, with a top speed surpassing 170mph.

Transmission options include the traditional six-speed manual and an enhanced 10-speed torque-converter automatic, available for both the GT and Dark Horse models. The design distinctions between the V8 GT and the Dark Horse are evident, with the GT adopting a more reserved aesthetic. This includes a grille inspired by the inaugural 1964 Mustang, complemented by sleeker headlights and new tri-bar LED daytime running lights.

Conversely, the Dark Horse features a more assertive design with a gloss black grille surround and air-intake nostrils, among other aerodynamic enhancements aimed at improving performance.

Internally, the Mustang offers dual screens as standard, with higher trims boasting a seamless, combined display of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch infotainment screen powered by Ford's latest Sync 4 system. This setup supports over-the-air updates and a high degree of customization, including a nostalgic nod with an optional digital display mimicking the Fox-body Mustangs' gauges of the 1979-1993 era.

The underpinnings of the Mustang include a carryover of its MacPherson strut front and independent rear suspension systems from the Mk6, enhanced with stiffened mountings, linkages, and new springs and dampers for improved handling.

An optional performance pack adds enhanced features such as wider tyres, Magneride adaptive dampers, larger rims, and upgraded Brembo brakes. A Torsen-style limited-slip differential is standard across all models, with the Mustang now featuring a drift brake for controlled slides in Track mode and a line-lock feature for burnouts.

Celebrating continuous production since 1964 with over 10 million units sold, the Ford Mustang maintains its status as the world's top-selling sports coupé, surpassing rivals like the Chevrolet Camaro and continuing its legacy as a symbol of performance and innovation.
