Smart has rolled out the #1 Pro variant, offering a more budget-friendly option for the compact electric crossover.

Priced from £31,950, the #1 Pro enters the lineup beneath the Pro+, Premium, and Brabus models, providing a cost reduction of around £5000. It begs the question, are electric cars becoming cheaper to buy?

With a 49kWh battery, the vehicle delivers a range of 193 miles and boasts a maximum charging rate of 130kW, allowing drivers to achieve a 10-80% charge in under half an hour.

The single rear-mounted electric motor of the #1 Pro produces a robust 268bhp, facilitating a brisk acceleration from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds.

Standard features encompass adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, a powered tailgate, heated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Smart strategically positions the #1 as a premium crossover, positioning it against rivals like the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric and Kia Niro EV. Despite being more affordable, the #1 Pro doesn't compromise on efficiency, with its range and performance figures aligning favorably with competitors.

In higher-end models, the 62kWh battery, with 150kW rapid-charging capacity, achieves a maximum range of 273 miles, with a 10-80% recharge completed in under 30 minutes.

The design of the #1 Pro underscores Smart's commitment to aerodynamic efficiency, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.29Cd. Distinctive design elements include a wrap-around front light bar, a two-tone paint scheme, a 'flying' roof, and a compact, squat profile.

Inside, connectivity and user-centric features take precedence, with a high-definition 12.8-inch infotainment screen that supports customisation and interaction with an avatar responsive to speech commands.

An accompanying app extends access to a range of connectivity functions and live data, complemented by over-the-air compatibility allowing remote updates for 75% of the car's ECUs.

The Pro+ variant introduces a panoramic roof, heated seats, and a 360-degree camera as standard, albeit without the heat pump available in pricier trim levels, resulting in a range limited to 260 miles. Pro+ models also lack a 22kW AC charger, restricting them to 7.4kW from a home wallbox.

Opting for the Premium trim enhances the #1 Pro with a heat pump and silicon-carbide inverter, elevating the range to 273 miles. This trim also includes a 22kW AC charger, facilitating a 10-80% recharge from a home supply within three hours.

At the top of the lineup, the performance-focused Brabus variant elevates the standard car's power and torque outputs to an impressive 422bhp and 431lb ft, reducing the 0-62mph sprint time from 6.7sec to a rapid 3.9sec – a notable improvement over the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX's 6.2sec.
