Mini has revealed the last petrol-powered version of its iconic three-door hatchback, now named the Cooper, marking the final chapter of combustion engines for this model. Since BMW's revival of the brand in 2000, the hatchback has been a cornerstone of Mini's offerings.

The latest, fourth-generation Cooper closely mirrors the appearance of its new electric counterpart, yet it diverges significantly in its mechanical underpinnings. The electric variant rides on a dedicated EV platform, whereas the petrol model is an extensively updated version of the existing design.

The boot capacity of the new Cooper stands at 210 litres, a minor reduction of one litre from the preceding model, yet it offers an additional 25 litres over its competitors, the Fiat 500 Hybrid, priced at £16,790.

However, it has a whopping 76 litres less boot space than the Mazda 2 Hybrid, despite being only 77mm shorter in length, albeit at a premium of £1,955.

The new Cooper will continue to feature two turbocharged petrol engines from the previous generation, albeit with notable improvements in performance. The entry-level Cooper C's 1.5-litre engine receives a 20bhp increase, reaching 154bhp, which shaves 0.4 seconds off the 0-62mph time, now 7.7 seconds, albeit at a slight cost to fuel efficiency, down by 3.5mpg.

The more powerful Cooper S model sees its 2.0-litre engine's output boosted by 25bhp to 201bhp, maintaining its 0-62mph acceleration time at 6.6 seconds, still faster than the top electric Cooper SE model, which clocks in at 6.7 seconds.

Both models will be equipped exclusively with automatic transmissions, following Mini's move away from manual gearboxes, as exemplified by the discontinuation of manual options in the John Cooper Works 1to6 special edition.

The interior of the new petrol three-door is defined by a minimalist dashboard, dominated by a pioneering round OLED touchscreen—the first in a production car. This display centralizes essential vehicle information and controls, including speed, fuel economy, and climate functions, with dedicated buttons retained for window demisters.

Significant changes include the relocation of the gear selector to a panel beneath the screen, where it's joined by the handbrake button, key starter, driving mode selector, and audio controls.

Pricing for the Cooper C starts at £22,300, aligning with the outgoing entry-level Cooper, while the Cooper S enjoys a price reduction from £27,555 to £26,700. This continues a recent trend of manufacturers reducing the starting price of their models.

The new petrol Minis are scheduled for delivery to customers starting this spring, with five-door hatchbacks and a John Cooper Works three-door variant expected by year-end. Additionally, a new Convertible is slated for release in 2025.
