After previously announcing the new Countryman, Mini is setting its sights on dominating the high-performance SUV category with the debut of the John Cooper Works Countryman, the largest Mini to date and a formidable contender in the segment.

The latest Countryman overshadows its predecessors, stretching an additional 120mm in length and widening by 22mm, measuring at 4433mm long and 1843mm wide.

Destined for the UK market in 2024, this robust Mini is powered by an upgraded turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine from BMW, delivering a hearty 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, distributing power to all four wheels.

While these specifications represent a marginal reduction from its forerunner, they stand on par with rivals such as the Cupra Ateca, Volkswagen T-Roc R, and the BMW X2 M35i, to which the Countryman is technically akin.

The performance figures are impressive, with Mini asserting a 0-62 mph acceleration time of just 5.4 seconds — a hair faster than the electric version of the Countryman — and a maximum speed cap of 155 mph.

Aesthetic enhancements set this model apart, featuring a redesigned front with a high-gloss black grille, distinctive LED headlight graphics courtesy of John Cooper Works, and a more pronounced bumper, accentuated by red vertical components in the air ducts.

The JCW trademark red adorns the brake calipers, mirror casings, roof, and C-pillar, adding a splash of sportiness. At the rear, updated light assemblies and a new bumper with a central diffuser and dual round black tailpipes on each side make their mark. The vehicle rides on uniquely designed 19-inch wheels as standard, with the option to upgrade to 20-inch variants.

Despite its larger size, Mini boasts a leading drag coefficient of 0.26 for the new Countryman. Inside, occupants are greeted by a new John Cooper Works steering wheel, sport seats, and a dashboard that sports a striking red and black theme.

Continuity within the revamped Mini family is maintained with a new circular touchscreen that is also found in other updated Mini models.

The performance-oriented Countryman is not just about looks; it features a specially tuned suspension system with stiffer springs and dampers to improve cornering agility and overall stability, distinguishing it from other models in the lineup.

Echoing the new Mini Cooper hatchback, the Countryman offers various 'atmospheric' driving modes, each designed to alter the vehicle's character, sound, and visual displays for an engaging driving experience.

Prospective buyers can anticipate the hot new crossover's starting price at £40,720, with Mini gearing up for the initial round of UK deliveries to commence early next year.
