In a strategic move responding to the rising cost of living crisis that has dampened new car sales, Renault has reintroduced a pure-petrol variant for its Clio model in the UK. Earlier this year, the Clio had been transitioned to a hybrid-only option in its latest facelift.

To cater to economically-challenged consumers, the Clio now boasts an 89bhp TCe petrol engine, shared with the Dacia Sandero. Exclusive to a manual transmission, this new petrol engine is priced £3,500 less than its hybrid counterpart.

This price adjustment brings the starting price of the Clio down to £17,795 from its earlier £21,295. Consequently, the Clio now offers a more competitive price point compared to some of its main rivals, including the Peugeot 208 (£20,610), Hyundai i20 (£20,770), and Vauxhall Corsa (£19,275).

While the latest Renault Clio did debut with a robust E-Tech full-hybrid 143bhp engine – blending a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors – the TCe 90 petrol alternative offers a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine with 89bhp and 118lb ft, delivering 56.5mpg.

Design-wise, the Clio has evolved with a more audacious look, reflecting Renault's updated design philosophy. Highlights include an expansive chequered grille, modernized lighting, and Renault's revamped 2D logo. The back showcases a fresh brake light design and a crisply angled bumper.

Dimensionally, the Clio retains its familiar footprint: standing 1440mm tall, spanning 1798mm wide, and stretching 4050mm in length. Notably, while the standard boot space is a generous 340 litres, the hybrid variant compromises a bit, offering 254 litres.

Inside, Renault introduces a sleek 10.0-inch edgeless instrument display, with lower trims featuring a 7.0-inch version. Premium models continue to sport the 9.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. A discernible upgrade in interior materials has been incorporated, with a notable shift towards soft-touch surfaces on the dashboard and doors. Sustainability is also in focus, with Renault opting to exclude leather trims. Further, the options packages have been streamlined for clarity.

The lineup culminates in the Esprit Alpine trim, a novelty first seen on the Renault Austral SUV. This top-tier variant is adorned with unique badges, exclusive color schemes, and diamond-cut 17-inch alloy wheels. With a starting price of £20,595, the Clio continues to provide value, even in its most luxurious form.
