Peugeot is back with a revamped version of its 208 supermini, which clinched the title of Europe's top-selling car last year. Starting at £20,400 in the UK, the updated model not only boasts an aesthetic refresh but also ushers in cutting-edge hybrid technology and an array of interior enhancements.

The new hybrid variants, which are shared with the revamped Vauxhall Corsa, meld the power of petrol engines with a six-speed automatic transmission, encompassing a 48V electric motor. This synergy results in outputs of 99bhp and 134bhp. The electrification not only ensures a more torque-rich performance in low revs but also bolsters fuel efficiency by 15%. Especially in city terrains, Peugeot asserts that these hybrids can rely on their electric prowess for over half of the driving time.

While the hybrid powertrains are the talk of the town, Peugeot has retained the unassisted 74bhp and 99bhp petrol engines, which come with five-speed and six-speed manual gearboxes, respectively. However, the diesel engine offering 100bhp has been shown the exit.

For the electric enthusiasts, the e-208 has been upgraded with a 154bhp motor, complemented by a heftier 51kWh battery. This combination promises an impressive 248 miles on a single charge, and with 100kW, a 20-80% recharge takes less than 25 minutes.

The facelift Peugeot 208 retains the same dimensions as the 2019 model, with a height of 1430mm, width of 1745mm and length of 4055mm. For the petrol versions, it has a boot capacity of 309 litres. If you opt for the electric version, that figure drops to 265 litres.

On the design front, the 208 now reflects the aesthetic finesse of its siblings, the 508 and 2008. The frontal facade showcases a pronounced tri-fang daytime-running light pattern, matched with a wider grille. The rear doesn't lag behind with its revamped light bar adorned with three vibrant red ‘claws’, seamlessly stretching across the boot.

Inside, the 10.0-inch touchscreen, once an exclusive feature for the upper echelons, is now standard. However, the high-definition iteration remains a privilege for the Allure and GT versions. The avant-garde i-Cockpit dashboard, with its uniquely shaped compact steering wheel, retains its position just below the instrument cluster.

To meet the EU's GSR2 safety mandates, the 208 has been fortified with a gamut of advanced driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, and lane-keeping assist. A 360-degree parking camera is also on offer for those seeking extra parking assurance.

The refreshed 208 continues with its three-tiered trim levels: Active, Allure, and GT. The base Active trim, although being the most accessible, still boasts analogue instruments.

As a pleasant surprise for potential buyers, Peugeot has made the 208 more wallet-friendly. The entry-level 1.2 Puretech Active has been marked down from £20,610 to £20,400. The e-208, with its suite of upgrades, starts at £32,400, which is a notable £2445 less than its predecessor. For those with an eye on the crème de la crème, the e-208 GT is priced at £36,250, undercutting the equivalent Vauxhall Corsa Electric by a significant £1835.
