Volkswagen has unveiled the latest Passat, set to hit the UK market by the end of 2023. And you will only be able to buy it in estate form. This upgraded model, boasting a larger size than its forerunner, shares its foundation with the Skoda Superb. It will be sold alongside the Volkswagen ID.7

Volkswagen are making strides in their hybrid offerings with two plug-in powertrains, each boasting an emission-free range of 62 miles. For those interested in petrol, the lineup presents a 1.5-litre eTSI mild-hybrid engine pushing out 150PS and coupled with a seven-speed DSG. Additionally, VW hasn't forgotten about enthusiasts with two 2.0-litre TSI petrol engines, delivering 204PS and 265PS. Notably, the high-powered variant is equipped with the 4Motion all-wheel drive.

On the diesel front, options range from 122PS, 150PS, to the 193PS versions, all from VW's reliable 2.0 TDI engine. The beefiest among them is paired with 4Motion for enhanced stability and power distribution.

However, the real stars of the show might be the all-new eHybrid models. They're now powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and come with an upgraded 19.7kWh battery – nearly twice the size of what powered the previous Passat GTE. This pushes the anticipated zero-emission range to a commendable 62 miles. VW is offering this eHybrid powertrain in two potent variations: 204PS and 272PS. And for those concerned about charging times, these models are tailored for 11kW AC charging and also support a zippy 50kW rapid charge.

2024 Volkswagen Passat Interior

Step into the revamped interior of the new Passat, and you'll see how it takes cues from the Golf's tech advancements, such as an advanced infotainment system. With a primary offering of a 12.9-inch infotainment display, those wanting an even more immersive experience can opt for the 15-inch version. What's more, this Passat proudly debuts as the first VW to incorporate the cutting-edge MIB4 operating system.

The Passat’s redesign introduces practical tweaks. The multifunction steering wheel, for instance, is thoughtfully crafted with tactile physical buttons over touchpads. This ensures every command is just a simple press away. And addressing feedback from the Golf and ID models, VW has finally integrated backlit touch sliders. These, located just below the display, make adjusting settings like the cabin's temperature or audio volume a breeze.

Underneath the car, substantial enhancements promise an elevated driving experience. With the innovative Vehicle Dynamics Management system making its entrance, it brings refined control over adaptive dampers and brake distribution.

2024 Volkswagen Passat Boot

Compared to its predecessor, the latest Passat significantly enhances practicality. It boasts an added length of 144mm, with 50mm attributed to an extended wheelbase – a notable improvement from the previous model. The boot capacity starts at 690 litres when the rear seats are up, a 40-litre jump from the eighth-generation. When you fold the seats, the space expands to 1,920 litres, marking an increase of 140 litres compared to the former model.

It's likely that the new Passat will launch sometime at the end of 2023 or in very early 2024. Deliveries should follow in Spring time, but expect the price to higher than that of the outgoing 8th generation Passat Variant.
