The BMW X2 has ushered in its second act, and it's come with quite the flair. Now cast in the mould of a larger, more dramatic SUV-coupé, the second generation is no mere facelift; it’s an evolution. And perhaps the most notable progression is its leap into the realm of electric power.

Dubbed the "baby sports SUV", the new X2 packs a turbocharged four-cylinder punch. With an impressive 296bhp and 295lb ft of torque, it sends power to all four wheels through a sophisticated seven-speed automatic gearbox. Complementing this is a mechanical limited-slip differential that promises to enhance traction, stability, and cornering dynamics. How swift is this package, you ask? Well, BMW states it can sprint from 0-62mph in a mere 5.4 seconds. That's enough to outpace the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Yet, if that's not swift enough, BMW has a racier card up its sleeve, with the petrol M35i. This variant, built to lock horns with rivals like the Cupra Formentor 2.0 TSI 310 and the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35, stands as the lineup's speed king.

But speed isn’t the X2’s only game. The iX2, drawing parallels with the iX1, brings the future to the present. However, while its maximum charging rate of 130kW on DC connections may not outshine competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 (which boast up to 350kW), BMW assures more consistent full-speed charging. This is credited to its newly revised software that offers a gentler drop-off curve as the battery gets closer to being full. In real-world terms? You get that high charging speed, even from 50%.

The iX2 isn't just about plugging in. Its regenerative braking, with adaptive technology, varies its intensity based on traffic conditions. It can regenerate energy at an impressive 120kW when hard braking or 60kW under normal deceleration. And if you're a driver who likes control, you can even adjust its strength manually via the touchscreen infotainment system.

As for the power? The iX2’s dual-motor setup on a four-wheel-drive platform churns out a commendable 309bhp and 364lb ft of torque. It’s brisk, accomplishing the 0-62mph dash in 5.6 seconds. Aerodynamic enhancements, paired with a drag coefficient 0.02 below its petrol sibling, allow it a WLTP-certified range of up to 279 miles. Quite an achievement considering it shares its platform with the iX1.

The new X2 doesn't just challenge its predecessor in performance but also in stature. Casting a shadow over rivals like the petrol Audi Q3 and the electric Audi A4 E-Tron, the new model is significantly more expansive. This isn't merely an aesthetic tweak; it's about space, measuring 200mm longer, 21mm wider and 64mm taller than the original model. With an added 115 litres of boot space and more legroom at the back, the X2 is as practical as it is stylish.

The design changes don't end there. The kidney grille, a signature of BMW, hasn't just grown; it's evolved. On the iX2, it's fully sealed, aiding aerodynamics and extending range. And for those who have an eye for detail, the grille on other models now has active cooling flaps to further optimize airflow.

The insides of the X2 echo the luxury and advancement of its exterior. The M35i variant, for instance, shuns the standard leather seats in favor of plush Alcantara buckets. Irrespective of the variant, all interiors are adorned with the latest iteration of BMW’s iDrive system, showcased on a 10.25-inch digital dial display and a larger 10.7-inch touchscreen. An intriguing feature is BMW’s Airconsole service, part of a broader digital services package. It allows car occupants to indulge in phone games right on the car's screens.

For those eyeing their wallets, the new X2 lineup starts at a reasonable £39,365 for the sDrive20i, which sports a three-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine boasting 168bhp. Those with a penchant for performance might be drawn to the M35i, priced at £47,395. But for the environmentally conscious, or those looking to embrace the future, the iX2, albeit a bit pricier at £56,540, might just be the ride to watch.
