It came as a surprise when Toyota initially declared that the most recent Prius hybrid wouldn't be making its way to the UK market. However, in an unexpected reversal, the Japanese carmaker has now confirmed that the vehicle will be released in the UK, though its price and detailed specifications are still under wraps. The fifth-generation Prius was introduced to the public in November 2022 and has been on sale in various global markets since spring.

The dimensions of the 2024 Prius have increased; it stands 1420mm tall, stretches 1782mm wide, and reaches a length of 4599mm. The boot capacity remains the same at 502 litres, positioning the new model as 50mm shorter in height, 22mm wider, and 59mm longer than its predecessor.

The updated Prius offers both plug-in hybrid and ‘Series Parallel Hybrid’ powertrain options, boasting an impressive fuel efficiency of up to 217 miles per gallon and CO2 emissions starting as low as 29 grams per kilometer.

The vehicle features a more streamlined exterior, incorporating design cues from Toyota's forthcoming bZ series of electric vehicles. Inside, the Prius showcases a revamped interior with a significantly larger touchscreen, adopting numerous technological advances from the all-electric bZ4X.


In Europe, the Prius is priced between approximately €45,000 and €50,000, which is roughly £39,000 to £43,000. Should this pricing be maintained for the UK market, the Prius would position itself as considerably pricier than the Corolla, which begins at £30,225 in the UK.

Toyota had previously rationalized the decision not to import the new model to the UK due to falling demand, with models such as the C-HR and Corolla infringing on the Prius's territory in the mid-size family car segment. The Prius had once been a favorite among the UK's private hire drivers for its fuel efficiency. However, the Corolla has been increasingly attractive to buyers, in part due to offering the same powertrain as the Prius, resulting in a dip in Prius sales in recent times.
