Mini took the wraps off its third-generation Countryman at the 2023 IAA Munich Motor Show, debuting alongside the Cooper Electric. The renowned British marque's compact SUV has expanded in dimensions, catering to families with increased space and versatility. For the first time, the Countryman offers a fully electric drive option.

Set to compete against models like the Volvo EX30 and KIA Niro EV, this fresh SUV from MINI boasts a lengthier 13cm and 6cm additional height compared to its predecessor. Its elongated wheelbase, considering its total length, enhances the interior space - vital for a compact family SUV.

Potential buyers can choose from two electric variants: the MINI Countryman Electric E and its more advanced sibling, the Countryman Electric SE. A 64.7kWh battery powers both variants. The Electric E harnesses its power to yield 201bhp and 250Nm of torque, boasting a 0-62mph sprint in 8.6 seconds. MINI asserts it can cover up to 287 miles when fully charged.

Meanwhile, the Countryman Electric SE offers dual electric motors, dishing out an impressive 308bhp and 494Nm of torque, slashing the 0-62mph acceleration to 5.6 seconds. This added prowess reduces the range slightly to 269 miles. Charging via 130kW DC ensures about 30 minutes for a 10-80% charge.

On the petrol front, the MINI Countryman C runs on a front-wheel drive. Although MINI hasn't disclosed its engine details, it's speculated to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder, producing 167bhp and 280Nm of torque. The acceleration benchmark stands at 8.3 seconds with an estimated 46.3mpg fuel consumption.

The likely contender for the Countryman S ALL4 is speculated to be a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, boasting 215bhp and 360Nm, with a 7.1-second acceleration due to its automatic transmission and AWD system. The flagship petrol model, Countryman JCW ALL4, promises an exhilarating 296bhp and 400Nm of torque, achieving 0-62mph in a swift 5.4 seconds.

Design-wise, the new Countryman echoes minimalistic aesthetics. Features like the octagonal grille and streamlined lights mirror the new Cooper, but unique lozenge-shaped headlights set the Countryman apart.

Cargo space is ample, with a capacity reaching up to 460 litres and expanding to 1,450 litres when rear seats are down. The vehicle even offers under-floor storage for electric charging cables. Additionally, rear seats can be adjusted 13cm either way, ensuring versatility between legroom and cargo space.

Tech-wise, the Countryman borrows the 9.4-inch central OLED from its three-door counterpart, powered by the Android-based Operating System 9. Users can personalize and configure their experience with modes like Core, Green, Go-Kart, Personal, Vibrant, Timeless, and Balance.

Increased driver assistance is another highlight, marking the Countryman as MINI's pioneer in Level 2 semi-autonomous driving. Features like Automatic Active Cruise Control and Steering and Lane Assistant offer hands-free steering up to 37mph.

Pricing details reveal the Countryman C starting at £28,500, with availability from February 2024. Other variants like the Countryman S and JCW have price tags of £33,900 and £39,900, respectively. The electric models, Countryman Electric E and Electric SE, are priced at £41,500 and £46,600, respectively.
